John Kent came of age when Carlisle was also growing up to be a busy industrial city.  The son of a freed slave, John became Britain's first black policeman.  He cut a fine figure in his high collared blue uniform coat and his athletic build served him well as he tramped twenty miles a night patrolling the city's alleys and lanes.  With his bait kept safe under his stovepipe hat he famously chained a villain to his firegrate before setting off after another suspect.
