William Graham, the poacher of Longdales, was as well-known locally for his fighting as for his folksinging. Accused of a keeper's murder, William was tried in Carlisle. The courtroom drama was sensational but William somehow escaped the gallows. Instead he was transported to Australia. While he marvelled at the sights of the outback, back home his tunes continued to be played. His own story was captured in song and continues to inspire musicians to this day.
